KATHY TAFT is running for Senate District 5 (Greene, Pitt, and Wayne), an open seat currently held by Democratic Senator John Kerr. She faces five men in the Democratic primary, and there is a good chance there will be a run-off. In November, she will face Republican Representative Louis Pate of Wayne County. Taft lives in Greenville and has four children. She is the Executive Director of Communities in Schools of Pitt County and is serving her second eight-year term on the State Board of Education. BARBARA GARRITY-BLAKE, is running for House District 13 (Carteret and Jones) against incumbent Republican Pat McElraft. Barbara lives in Gloucester with her husband, Bryan, and has three children. She taught at East Carolina University for nine years. Currently, Garrity-Blake works on a contract basis as a social science researcher, and she has served two terms on the NC Marine Fisheries Commission. She received her BA in English and Anthropology from Florida State University and her MA and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Virginia. Garrity-Blake is concerned about the effects of population growth in coastal NC and impact of this growth on education, access to affordable health care, and economic disparities. JANE WHILDEN is running for House District 116 (Buncombe), an open seat currently held by freshman Republican Representative Charles Thomas. Businessman Tim Moffitt is the Republican candidate. Whilden lives in Asheville with her husband, David, and has three children. She recently resigned as Director of the Western Office of the Governor so that she can campaign full time. Her seven years at the Governor’s Office afforded her the opportunity to listen to and help many Western residents with their issues. Whilden received her BA in Sociology from UNC-Chapel Hill. SENATOR KATIE DORSETT, Senate District 28, (Guilford) is being challenged in the primary by current Guilford County Commissioner Bruce Davis. Senator Dorsett lives in Greensboro with her husband, Warren. She is the Senate Majority Whip and Chair of the Appropriations on General Government and Information Technology Committee. She has advocated for parity and equity in the legislative process, including the state budget. Prior to her services in the NC Senate, Dorsett was Secretary of Administration, making her the first African-American woman to hold a state cabinet post in North Carolina. REPRESENTATIVE ANGELA BRYANT, House District 7 (Halifax and Nash) is being challenged in the primary by Jean Reaves. She is the Senior Consultant and Co-Founder of VISIONS Inc. She is an attorney, former Deputy Commissioner with the NC Industrial Commission, former Administrative Law Judge, and former Trustee for the UNC Board of Governors. This legislative session, Bryant served on the Election Laws and Campaign Finance Reform Committee and as Vice-Chair of the Insurance Committee. REPRESENTATIVE TRICIA COTHAM, House District 100 (Mecklenburg) is being challenged in the primary by Lloyd Scher, who previously challenged her in the Party caucus to fill this seat. Representative Cotham was appointed to this seat in March of 2007. She is an Assistant Principal at East Mecklenburg High School but is on leave while serving in the General Assembly. Cotham is the youngest member in the NC General Assembly. This session, she served on the Education Committee and the House Select Committee on Street Gang Prevention. REPRESENTATIVE ANNIE MOBLEY, House District 5 (Hertford, Bertie, Perquimans, and Gates) is being challenged in the primary by Robert Richardson, a minister, who briefly served on the Hertford County Commission. Representative Mobley is retired from the Administrative Office of the Courts. She is a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for her service in government. This session she served as Vice-Chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee and is on the Agribusiness and Agricultural Economy Committee. SENATOR ELLIE KINNAIRD, Senate District 23, (Orange and Person) is challenged in the primary by current Orange County Commissioner Moses Carey. Senator Kinnaird lives in Carrboro where she served four terms as Mayor. She is Chair of both the Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety and the Mental Health/Youth Services Committees. She was a legal services lawyer and is now in private practice. Senator Kinnaird has been a tireless advocate for campaign finance and lobbying reform and is committed to increasing the number of women in elected office.
