Celebration of Legislative Women
The Power Of Women Can Put Women In Power
Victory Breakfast, January 1999
On January 27, 1999 Lillian's List began a biannual tradition of
celebration of legislative women with the first biannual Victory
Breakfast. Lillian's List was honored to have EMILY's List President
Ellen Malcolm address the breakfast recognizing the three newly elected
legislators recommended by Lillian's List. More than 150 enthusiastic
supporters celebrated their election at the breakfast at the Cardinal
Club in Raleigh, on January 27, 1999, the morning of the convening of
the legislative session. Malcolm congratulated Lillian's List with
these impressive victories in their first year of organization.
"The power of women can put women in power", declared Malcolm,
citing the outstanding examples of Senators Linda Garrou and Kay Hagan,
and Representative Marian McLawhorn. The new legislators echoed
Malcolm's sentiment, crediting support from the members of Lillian's
List as the key to electing them to office.
Malcolm is both founder and President of EMILY's List. An acronym
for "Early Money is Like Yeast" because it "makes the dough rise,",
EMILY's List is the nation's largest resource for federal and some
statewide candidates, supporting pro-choice Democratic women
campaigning for governor, the U. S. Senate, and the House of
Representatives. Malcolm and a group of friends founded EMILY's List in
1985.
Empowering Women
Lillian's List Winners Celebrated: Secretary of State Elaine Marshall Speaks
Celebration Breakfast, January, 2001 It
was the first day of the 2001 legislature - a new year beginning - and
the energy was high. More than 200 supporters gathered for a breakfast
on January 24, sponsored by Lillian's List, to celebrate the success of
Democratic women in the 2000 election.
Jan Allen, Chair of Lillian's List, welcomed the crowd and noted that
the 2000 elections set a new record for the number of women elected
statewide. North Carolina's new female Democratic Council of State
members Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue and Agriculture Commissioner Meg
Scott Phipps were introduced and greeted the gathering. Berni Gaither,
Lillian's List Candidate Chair, congratulated the three Lillian's List
2000 election winners: Representative Lorene Coates (Rowan County),
Representative Jennifer Weiss (Wake County), and Representative Alice
Graham Underhill (Craven County). All thanked the members of Lillian's
List and credited their successful campaigns to the organization.
Keynote Speaker North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall,
having made history herself when she became the first woman elected to
the NC Council of State in 1996, noted these achievements of female
candidates in the 2000 electoral cycle. Secretary Marshall, Lt.
Governor Perdue, Commissioner Phipps, and the women in the legislature
continue to blaze the trail begun by Lillian Exum Clement for other
women to follow.
