A Strong Voice for Women
Representative Fisher has helped pass legislation expanding and toughening domestic violence laws and helped increase funding for community-based programs helping women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. In the most recent interim between the long and short sessions of the General Assembly, she was appointed to the Joint Study Commission on Work and Family Balance, a committee working on issues affecting women in the workplace. Susan helped form the organization WNC Citizens for Choice, served as one of the first board members of the Center for Diversity Education, and received Planned Parenthood's "B. Holt" award, named for the longtime NC House member, for her early efforts to pass the Healthy Youth Act. Rep. Fisher also helped pass a law improving the gender equity reporting statute, ensuring that appointments to decision-making regulatory bodies are fair to women, and has consistently worked to ensure that women's voices are heard in policy decisions.

A Tireless Advocate for Children and Education Education is Rep. Fisher’s top priority. As a parent, as former Chair of the Asheville City School Board, and as Vice-Chair of the NCGA Education Committee and Chair of the Education Subcommittee on Pre-School, Elementary, and Secondary Education, Susan strongly believes that our public schools need resources to provide quality education for all students.
Rep. Fisher was also a primary sponsor of the Healthy Youth Act, a landmark law requiring that all North Carolina school districts provide medically accurate, science-based, comprehensive sex education. The bill was supported by a coalition of public health experts, civil rights organizations, parents, education professionals and teens. See “North Carolina Law Viewed As ‘Model’ For Other States” for more information.

A Passionate Champion of Civil Rights and Social Justice
Representative Fisher is a passionate champion of civil rights for all people. Susan has worked to overcome the legacy of segregation in North Carolina, helping pass the Racial Justice Act, allowing people facing the death penalty to present evidence of racial bias in court. Susan believes that all people deserve equal rights, and has been honored by Equality NC for her work to promote equal civil rights for all people regardless of sexual orientation and to include penalties for harassment of GLBT students in the School Violence Prevention Act. Susan has also worked for equal rights for women for her entire political career. |
