Why it Matters
- Jennifer is in her sixth term in the General Assembly. She is one of the first women in the NC House ever to have been appointed to chair a judiciary committee and is now serving as the only current female chair of the powerful House Finance committee.

Jennifer is known for her hard work, perseverance and results. She was ranked as the 14th most effective member of the NC House in a recent NC Center for Public Policy Research Survey.

Jennifer has received numerous awards for her legislative accomplishments and for her advocacy in support of the environment, children, senior citizens and social justice.

Jennifer is a working mother. She practiced law in a large corporate law firm, stayed home when her children were younger and then re-entered the workforce. She knows the challenges today’s families face as they balance their family and their work obligations.

Jennifer has a record of advocacy for women and families
Before serving in the NC House, Jennifer worked with women as a peer counselor and as the Legal Services Coordinator at the Women’s Center in Raleigh. As a legislator, Jennifer strengthened domestic violence laws in our state by working to increase the penalties for strangulation. She currently serves on the Child Fatality Task Force and the Aging Study Commission and has consistently sponsored legislation to keep our children safe and to promote better care and services for senior citizens. |
Jennifer is a champion for the environment
Jennifer has sponsored numerous environmental protection bills over the years and has consistently received the endorsement of the NC Sierra Club and the Conservation Council of NC. She has supported legislation to promote renewable energy production and more sustainable development in our state.

Jennifer is a progressive leader in the NC House
As a Finance Chair, Jennifer serves on Speaker Joe Hackney’s leadership team, and contributes to the development of finance policy in NC. She previously served as the Chair of the Wake County legislative delegation for 2 terms. Jennifer has consistently supported public education; she knows that a well-educated workforce is the best economic development tool we have to recruit and retain good jobs in our state. She is known for championing the “underdog” and is a strong advocate for people with mental illness and disabilities and for the disadvantaged.
